Offering Meditation for Proper 21 – 1-October-23
1-October-23 (Matthew 21:23-32)
As has been said, the problem with the Pharisees was not that they weren't trying to do good. It was that they were also limiting who was seen to be worthy of the good works they did and who was welcome in worship and the life of their faith community. In addition to contributing our financial resources and time and abilities to the ministries of the church, we also need to make sure that those ministries demonstrate the love of God, freely given to all people. We need to show through our work that all are welcome in the Beloved Community.
Let's consider that as we take up our offering for today.
Prayer:
Loving God, we are grateful for the way you love us, often in spite of ourselves. We also thank you for these gifts that we are returning to you so that the work of the church can be done. Bless these gifts that they will be used in ways that demonstrate your love for all people. Bless these gifts that they will be used to break down barriers and welcome people into your Beloved Community. Bless these who give as well that they will also act as you do to show love to all.
We pray in Jesus' name. AMEN.
