Table Meditation (Gospel) for Advent 4b 24-December-23
24-Dec-23 (Luke 1:26-38)
In the gospel reading for today, we hear the story of Mary who, when told the incredible news that she would be the mother of Jesus, said with simple humility, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Years later, as John tells us, Jesus himself wrapped a servant's towel around him and washed his disciples feet saying, " I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you." So today, as we come to the Table, let it be in the same mind as Mary and our Lord saying “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”
Let us pray.
Prayer:
God, who calls us into loving service, we thank you for the example all your servants offer, but most of all, your own Son. We thank you for Jesus, who was obedient to you even to giving up his life. We thank you that his death opens the way to live rightly with you and each other. We thank you for these symbols of bread and cup that bring all that into memory.
We pray that you would strengthen us and fill us with your Spirit, that we can truly be your servants in this world, bringing life and hope to all we meet.
In the name of Jesus, our Christ, AMEN
