26-Dec-21 (Luke 2:41-52)
Jesus answers his parents in our gospel lesson for today, "Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” It may have been immature of Jesus not to have told his parents where he would be, but he's right in saying that this was the right place for him to be.
Here at the table is the right place for us to be. It is here that we remember again the love of God that would not let sin and death keep us away. It is here that we remember our own sinfulness and come together as sinners in need of grace and as beloved children of God who are given that grace. It is here that we are reminded that we are all equal and all love in God's sight.
Truly, it is the right place for us to be.
Let us pray.
Prayer:
God who reaches out to us and draws us in, we thank you for this table, where your children all can gather together. We thank you for our brother Jesus, who gave so much to open this way for us. We thank you for these symbols of bread and cup that focus our memories.
As we take the bread and cup, draw all of us closer to you and to each other, that the world will truly know you by how much we love each other. As we go from this table, let us carry that love with us into your world to all who are desperate to hear of it.
In the name of Jesus, our Savior, Amen.
