15-May-22 Fifth Sunday of Easter (John 13:31-35)
In our gospel reading for today, Jesus shows his disciples and us that the world's attitude toward power and prestige don't have a place in the Realm of God. Jesus takes on the role of the servant and washes his disciples' feet. He says, "I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you."
As we come to the table, we come from many different places in life and in the spectrum of worldly power and honor. Like Jesus, the gift we can give to each other is to put all that aside and learn to serve each other.
Let us pray.
Prayer:
God, who loves us enough to take on the role of a servant for us, we thank you for your servant, Jesus, who taught us how to live a life of service to you and others. We thank you for him walking the path of obedience, even to death and securing for us freedom from death and sin. We thank you for these symbols that remind us of what he gave to make that so.
Now, as we take the bread and cup, fill us again with your Spirit, that we may be your true servants in your world.
In the name of Jesus, our Risen Lord, Amen.
