Table Meditation (Gospel) for Ordinary 1b – 10-January-21
10-January-21 (Matthew 2:1-12)
The wisemen brought three gifts to Jesus. Gold, the metal of kings, incense, used by priests in worship, and myrrh, used in preparing the dead for burial. That third gift was a symbol that Jesus death would have great meaning. And it is that meaning that we remember at the Table. We remember that Jesus died in order to open the way for us to have true life with God and with each other. That is certainly God's greatest gift to us.
Let us pray.
Prayer:
God, who gave us the gift of the life and death of your Son, we thank you. We thank you for these symbols of bread and cup that, like the myrrh, speak of Jesus' death for us. As we remember the Christ, fill us with your Spirit, that we may bring the message of your love to the world waiting to hear it.
In the name of Jesus, our Christ, AMEN
