16-Jan-22 (John 2:1-11)
The gospel reading today is an ... interesting one. It's a bit hard to figure out what to make of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding. What does that show us about who Jesus is and who God is? Well, one thing we can say from it is that God will often act in ways that surprise us, intrigue us, and sometimes confound us.
Here at the table, we see God acting in another surprising way. God welcomes anyone who would come to the table. It doesn't matter who we are or what we've done. We're all welcome here. Remember that even Judas was present for that Last Supper.
So, let us come to this table, ready to be surprised by God's love and forgiveness that we find here. Come to this table with open hearts and spirits to see what God will do.
Let us pray.
Prayer:
God who surprises us with your love, we come ready to receive your grace. Thank you for this bread and cup, symbols of that love and how much you gave to show your love for us. As we take this bread and cup, fill our spirits again with your Spirit that we can go into our world and surprise others with your love.
In the name of Jesus, our Savior, Amen.
