6-Mar-19 (Luke 4:1-13)
Sometimes, like when Jesus was in the desert, we are hungry for physical nourishment. Other times, we hunger for more than just something to fill our stomachs. The small amount of bread and drink we have in front of us is not enough to slake our physical hunger or thirst, but it is more than enough, in symbolizing Jesus' own body and blood, to fill the spiritual hunger that gnaws at us in this world. "Human beings don't live by bread alone.", Jesus says to the tempter. Here at the table we have food for our very souls.
Let us pray.
Prayer:
God who comes to us with spiritual power, we thank you that these symbols in front of us, the bread and cup, are enough to fill our spirits' hunger for you. As we take them and remember all Jesus gave to open the way for us to fully live, fill us again with your Holy Spirit that we may withstand the temptations of the world, hold onto the words of your gracious love, and take those words into our would that starves to hear it.
In the name of Jesus, our Savior, Amen.
