2-Jan-22 (John 1:1-18)
It's probably no accident that the beginning of the book of Genesis and the beginning of the gospel of John begin with the same words, "In the beginning..." John wants us to know that this Jesus we're about to read about is one with the one God who created all things.
So it is that when we come to this table, we understand that our host here is none other than God, who created all things and who loves each and every one of us.
Though we preside at and though we come to this table, it is not ours to do with as we please. The grace and forgiveness we find here is much, much more than just our own. So come to this table, knowing that the God who created you and who loves you wants you to be here. Come knowing that the God who created all people is also calling them.
Let us pray.
Prayer:
God who reaches out to us and draws us in, we thank you for this table, where all of your children all can gather together. We thank you for Jesus, who taught us that we are all sisters and brothers. We thank you for Jesus who gave his own life to show us how much you love us. We thank you for these symbols of bread and cup that remind us of all these things.
As we take the bread and cup, draw all of us closer to you and to each other, that the world will truly know you by how much we love each other. As we go from this table, let us carry that love with us into your world to all who are desperate to hear of it.
In the name of Jesus, our Savior, Amen.
