28-Aug-22 (Luke 14:1,7-14)
Jesus warns his disciples against arrogance in the gospel reading for today. As we gather at the table, let us consider that again. Each of us comes at the call of our host, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Compared to who Jesus is, any personal importance, or lack thereof, is so insignificant, that we cannot assume any status, higher or lower than anyone else who comes. We all equal here. We are beloved children of our God and King.
Let us pray.
Prayer:
God who is both absolute sovereign and loving parent to all of us, we thank you for sending Jesus, our brother to teach us how to worship and love you as we ought. We thank you for the gift of abundant life and freedom from sin that he gave to us through his death. We thank you for this bread and cup that remind us that he didn't hold back even his life for us.
As we take the bread and cup, renew your Spirit in us that we can become your servants, messengers, and even friends here and now and especially out in the world.
In the name of Jesus, our Risen Lord, Amen.
