30-Oct-22 (Luke 19:1-10)
I'm sure I don't need to tell you that Zacchaeus wasn't the only sinner in Jericho. It wasn't that he was the best of the worst either. It probably wasn't that Jesus knew that he'd have a change of heart if given the chance. I think that it was simply that Zacchaeus was a child of God, loved by God and Jesus wanted him to know that.
Just as Jesus showed God's love to Zacchaeus by choosing to eat with him. So God shows his love for us by inviting us to this symbolic meal.
God loves each of us dearly and wants us to know that. He's invited us to this meal to show us. Here we remember Jesus, who showed us how God loves us in all that he did in life and even went to the cross to defeat sin and death for us so we could be right with God and each other.
Let us pray.
Prayer:
God who loves us completely, we thank you for Jesus, who came to show your love for us and gave his life to set us free from sin and death. We thank you for these symbols that help us remember all he gave to show us that love.
Now, as we take this bread and cup, symbols of his body and blood, let us become Jesus body in this world and take the message and actions of his love out into the world.
In the name of Jesus, our Risen Lord, Amen.
