Table Meditation (Gospel) for Proper 16a – 27-August-23
27-August-23 (Matthew 16:13-20)
Jesus commends Peter saying "flesh and blood have not revealed this to you." Interesting that Jesus himself was revealing God in flesh and blood. Here at the table, these two symbols, the bread and the cup represent the broken flesh and spilled blood that Jesus gave to open the way for us to be right with God. As we go to the Table, let us "Consider him who endured such hostility against himself" for our sake.
Let us pray.
Prayer:
Loving, giving God, we praise you and thank you for you son, who revealed you to us in flesh and blood. We thank you for his sacrifice, that conquered sin and death and all that stands between us and you, between us and others, and between us and your creation.
We thank you for these symbols of bread and cup that remind us of all of that. Fill us with joy in our salvation that will move us to share that Good News with others.
In Jesus name, AMEN
